Bowl of Cheese Straws

Our story

Mary grew up on a small farm in Cusseta, Alabama—learning resilience and responsibility early after losing her father at a young age. In a tight-knit community where neighbors became family, one gifted her a cheese straw recipe that would shape Mary’s future.

Years later, that same recipe—refined over time, made with real cheese, butter, flour, salt, and red pepper—became the centerpiece of a business rooted in purpose. Today, Mary’s Last Straw is a celebration of Southern tradition, hospitality, faith, and food that tells a story.

At the heart of every batch is Mary’s unshakable faith. We believe in living simply, treating people with kindness, and honoring God through hard work and honesty. Our mission isn’t just to make the best cheese straws you’ve ever tasted—it’s to carry forward a legacy of faith, family, and flavor.

How They’re Made

At Mary’s Last Straw, we don’t believe in cutting corners—just cheese straws. Each batch begins the same way Mary’s always made them: with real, sharp cheddar cheese, softened butter, plain flour, a pinch of salt, and a dusting of red pepper for just the right amount of kick.

From there, the dough is hand kneaded and mixed in small batches—never mass produced—and shaped with care using a classic cookie press. There’s no automation here, no factory line. Just a few pairs of hands, rolling, pressing, and baking each batch to golden perfection.

Once they’re out of the oven, the cheese straws cool on racks until they’re crisp on the outside but still melt-in-your-mouth tender. We package them with just as much care as we bake them, so they arrive at your door fresh, flavorful, and ready to share.

It’s a process that takes more time, but we believe it’s worth it. Because when something’s made with love, you can taste the difference.

“I just wanted to make something simple and good, something that reminded folks of home.”
